(26th – 29th April 2013)
We thank God for a fruitful and meaningful ministry at Calvary Miri B-P Church. Together with Elder Chan Wan Fook of Calvary Jaya B-P Fellowship, we spent three days ministering God’s Word to the church which is made up of about four families (mostly ladies, youth and children – about 20 in number).
The church comes under the care of Calvary Jaya B-P Fellowship, Petaling Jaya, West Malaysia. Ms Marilyn Nanta, a graduate of Far Eastern Bible College (FEBC), was recently appointed to take care of this ministry. Though she is from the Iban tribe, she has progressed well in learning Kayan, the tribal language of the church members, so that she can minister more effectively to them. Thank God for her devotion to the flock. Elder Chan Wan Fook visits once a month to minister God’s Word, as well as to oversee the practical aspects of the work.
The church is housed in the Taman Tunku housing development area, about 20 minutes’ drive from our hotel. Come October, they hope to move to a more spacious neighbouring corner unit.
Speaking in both “Bahasa Malay” and English, we were able to enjoy sweet fellowship with the brethren: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps. 133: 1). Truly, the love of Christ transcends all barriers. Thank God for encouraging our hearts through these devoted brothers and sisters in Christ.
Friday 26th April
Almost the whole church, including the children turned up to pray. Alvin, a young man, chaired the Prayer Meeting. Elder Chan’s devotion from Psalm 139 was about the incommunicable attributes of God, namely His omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence.
Saturday 27th April
The Youth Fellowship was scheduled for 3.00 pm. I spoke on the topic, “Conduct of Youth”. We discussed several issues like resolving conflicts and communicating with our family members in a God-honouring way.
Running concurrently was the Ladies’ Fellowship. Helen spoke to the ladies on “The Excellent Wife and Mother” (Part I) based on Proverbs 31: 10-31.
After a short rest at our hotel, we returned to the church for Family Worship at 7.30 pm. Again, there was full attendance. As the theme for our mission trip was “God’s will for the family”, I spoke on “The Foundation of a Happy Home”. The text was taken from Psalm 127.
Lord’s Day 28th April
The morning worship service at 9.00 am was chaired by Elder Chan. I conducted the Lord’s Supper before delivering my message, “The Roles and Responsibilities of Husbands and Wives”, based on Ephesians 5: 21-33. With the few ordained ministers who have committed themselves to serve the Lord and His church in Miri, the members are now able to partake of the Lord’s Supper on a more regular basis.
The Sunday School children were taught by Sister Marilyn. After the service, Helen continued her study with the ladies on Proverbs 31: 10-31.
At 5.00 pm, Brother Sylvester led the evening worship service (Sunset Gospel Hour) in “Bahasa Malay”. I spoke on “The Roles and Responsibilities of Parents”. As parents, we are to lead, instruct, nurture, admonish our children, and pray for them. Set before them a godly example. We are commanded to: “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22: 6); and “.... provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6: 4).
We thank the Lord for blessing us with a meaningful ministry. May the Lord strengthen and use this church for His glory and the blessing of His saints. Let us uphold our brethren in their work of grace at Calvary Miri B-P Church. Remember also Elder Chan and Sister Marilyn as they faithfully labour on. Amen.
